J. Mark Hylton, Jr., MD, is assistant professor of anesthesiology at UNC Health. He practices at UNC Health Wayne in Goldsboro, NC, and is a per diem anesthesiologist with North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA) at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital. Dr. Hylton is passionate about pre-operative optimization and education, point of care ultrasound (POCUS), enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), quality improvement, and regional anesthesia. Dr. Hylton received his undergraduate degree at Virginia Tech (Go, Hokies!), where he studied human nutrition, foods, and exercise. He was fortunate to work with the football and basketball programs as a student athletic trainer. He then attended the VCU School of Medicine/Medical College of Virginia for medical school and residency. During his medical education, Dr. Hylton developed a strong interest in health policy, advocacy, and citizenship, and he is an active member in local, state, and national societies. He is vice chair of his local practice in Goldsboro, where he serves on the Medical Staff Executive Committee and Performance Improvement Committee. He is the ERAS physician lead and medically directs the pre-anesthesia clinic. Outside of the hospital, Dr. Hylton enjoys spending time with his family, outdoor activities, traveling, and sipping on a craft beer or bourbon. He is also a Peloton enthusiast and enjoys riding with Alex Toussaint.
Caroline Columbres, MD, is chair of anesthesia at the Brooklyn Hospital Center. She began working at the Brooklyn Hospital as a rookie attending and moved up the ranks to become chair, nine years after starting her first shift.
Dr. Columbres graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in Biology and minor in Psychology. She graduated from medical school at Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara and completed her anesthesia residency at Maimonides Medical Center. Her current focus is on increasing OR efficiency and fostering multidisciplinary relationships and communication to lead to better patient outcomes.
Ronald S. Bank, MD, FASA, is an attending anesthesiologist at the INOVA Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA, a Level I trauma center and the quaternary care flagship hospital of the INOVA Health System. Dr. Bank serves in the cardiac anesthesia section and is the chief of trauma anesthesia and director of airway management. He is a member of the advisory board of the anesthesia practice and serves on numerous hospital and system committees. Dr. Bank is passionate about teaching and is an assistant professor of medical education at the UVA School of Medicine INOVA Campus. He is involved in the education of pre-hospital care providers and has acted as a consultant to several federal agencies. Dr. Bank has served on the board of directors of the Medical Society of Northern Virginia. He currently serves the Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists as an alternate delegate to the ASA.
Dr. Bank received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his anesthesia residency and cardiac anesthesia fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Bank has earned numerous awards—including a teaching award from the Johns Hopkins Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine, the Chairman’s Award from the Department of Anesthesia at INOVA Fairfax Hospital, and the Citizen Award from the Fairfax County Virginia Police Department for his work in training the helicopter medics—as well as numerous honors and scholarships. He has co-authored several academic articles and is a contributor to and editor of an upcoming book. Dr. Bank is a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology and the National Board of Echocardiography in Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography.
