This activity contributes to the Quality Improvement (QI) component of the American Board of Anesthesiology’s (ABA) redesigned Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program® (MOCA®). Earn up to 4 points for completion of the activity.

  • Perform and interpret screening tools for cognitive impairment and frailty in older adults anticipating inpatient procedures.
  • Inform the patient’s family of possible outcomes based on screening results.
  • Develop a plan for changing patient care based on preoperative screening.
  • Compare the benefits and risks of neuraxial and general anesthesia in older adults, emphasizing their equivalent impact on postoperative delirium risk.
  • Demonstrate effective shared decision-making strategies to involve older adult patients and their families in selecting between neuraxial and general anesthesia.
  • Develop anesthetic care plans for older adults that prioritize safety, efficacy, and individual patient characteristics.
  • Identify and manage potential adverse effects of dexmedetomidine, including strategies to mitigate bradycardia and hypotension in older patients.
  • Develop anesthetic plans that incorporate dexmedetomidine as a preventive strategy for postoperative delirium, when clinically appropriate.
