In the article, Rita Agarwal, M.D., FASA, a member of ASA’s Committee on Communications, wrote on language to use or avoid to decrease stigma and negative bias when caring for pain patients with substance use disorder. “We must recognize that the language we use to describe patients with mental health disorders, particularly those with substance use disorder, is often very stigmatizing,” she wrote.
