In the article, Mark Zakowski, M.D., FASA, chair of ASA’s Committee on Obstetric Anesthesia, discussed the importance of understanding the root causes of maternal mortality, including racial and ethnic disparities, to improve the maternal death rate in the U.S. “The increase in state-level and local-level reviews of maternal deaths and improved monitoring, have allowed anesthesiologists to identify causes and potential areas of improvement in maternal mortality,” he wrote.
