ASA members address racial disparities in pulse oximeter performance on CNN

Jeffrey Feldman, MD, Cheryl Gooden, MD, FASA, and Jesse Ehrenfeld, MD, FASA, were quoted in CNN’s coverage of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) committee panel hearing held in February to discuss future research into a potential link between errors in pulse oximeter performance and patients’ skin pigmentation, race, and ethnicity. “There’s no question that more diversity needs to be a part of whatever new requirements that they would issue,” Dr. Feldman said.
