On behalf of the American Society of Anesthesiologists®, I congratulate the American Academy of Anesthesiologist Assistants celebrating AA Day on Friday, June 6. This important day recognizes anesthesiologist assistants for their dedication to safe patient care and their valuable role on the Anesthesia Care Team.
Anesthesiologist assistants are highly qualified anesthesia providers who assist physician anesthesiologists in providing the best possible care to our patients. They should be commended for their hard work in and out of the operating room.
Anesthesiologist assistants have served patients as members of physician anesthesiologist-led anesthesia care teams for more than 40 years. They are now authorized to practice in 16 states and the District of Columbia, and are recognized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) and the Veterans Affairs system. It is a testament to their education, skill and training that these agencies authorize anesthesiologist assistants to provide anesthesia to the country’s sickest patients.
ASA values every member of the Anesthesia Care Team, and with the help of anesthesiologist assistants, we will continue to provide the highest-quality outcomes for our patients.
Respectfully yours,
Jane C.K. Fitch, M.D.
