In early 2010, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA®) determined that a new headquarters facility was necessary to fulfill the needs of its physician anesthesiologist members and employees to successfully continue its mission to improve patient care through education and advocacy. The ASA Ad Hoc Committee on Headquarters Building Construction worked with architecture firm Tilton, Kelly + Bell LLC and ASA executive office leadership to design a building that not only provided an extraordinary upgrade to existing staff facilities and services, but offered opportunities for growth for years to come.
The new headquarters building would be located at 1061 American Lane in Schaumburg, Ill. A groundbreaking ceremony on April 27, 2013 marked the start of construction on the three-story, 71,635-square-foot building capable of accommodating a growing staff and increased meeting capacity. ASA employees entered their new office building on June 23, 2014.
ASA’s headquarters boasts a highly efficient and contemporary but thoughtful architectural design. The appearance is sleek and modern from the inside out. Tilton, Kelly + Bell incorporated the building’s outdoor surroundings – the pond, lush greenery and graded slopes – into the interior architecture. In a world where generic, cookie-cutter space is generally favored, the headquarters building is entirely unique as it is designed to cater to the Society’s specific needs and to complement the outdoor site where it sits.
Unique spaces within the building create a powerful first impression and an interesting layout for the building’s first floor, which features mainly public spaces with irregular shapes to support the very specific and individual requirements of areas such as the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology, an auditorium, a fitness center, a lunchroom and a multi-purpose room. The auditorium is located at the furthest point to the west so the tiered seating follows the natural grade of the site on which it was built. The auditorium and multi-purpose room form an exterior courtyard lined with lush greens and a modern metal screen wall, preserving clear views of the lake. Outdoor space is abundant. The patio off of the lunchroom follows the curve of the green along the lake, showcasing trees that line the waterway.
A central, sky-lit atrium connects the public, first-floor spaces to the staff and office spaces on the second and third floors. The office spaces are arranged in a ring around the atrium, maximizing daylight and flexibility to meet the changing needs of the Society. All shared meeting spaces open to the atrium, creating a central hub of circulation and interaction. The enclosed conference rooms and huddle spaces have glass walls to facilitate collaboration among Society departments and staff members, and between ASA and the public.
The ASA headquarters is a vibrant space for physician anesthesiologist members and staff to conduct business and collaborate on the important initiatives impacting the future of health care. With its sleek and purposeful design, the building melds form and function and brings great pride and pleasure to staff, members and visitors.
