On April 1, from 1:30-3 p.m. EST, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is hosting a national call with a question and answer session for eligible professionals about registration for the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program. The presentation will cover: eligibility for incentives, switching between Medicare and Medicaid Incentive Programs, reassigning payments, pre-registration, registration and helpful resources. ASA has been working to make changes to the regulations so anesthesiologists can receive the incentive payments and avoid the future payment cuts. This call provides ASA members with an opportunity to ask questions concerning the changes that are needed in the “meaningful use” requirements for anesthesiologists to be eligible for the program.
On February 18, the American Society of Anesthesiologists submitted a letter to CMS regarding the implementation of HITECH Act, the Electronic Health Records (HER) Incentive Program and its potential impact on anesthesiologists and the patients for whom anesthesiologists provide high quality and safe care. ASA provided a comprehensive chart that requests CMS and ONC revise the Stage 1 meaningful use requirements to ensure that the majority of anesthesiologists eligible for the incentive program have relevant and applicable criteria for which they can demonstrate compliance. ASA believes that substantive adjustments to the meaningful use rules and certification requirements outlined in the chart provided could enable millions of patients to have their critical perioperative data collected by anesthesiologists using certified AIMS technology.
