The American Society of Anesthesiologists is proud to announce that it has joined with the Obama Administration and its "Partnership for Patients" initiative to help improve the quality, safety and affordability of health care for all Americans. The initiative intends to bring together leaders from all health care stakeholders, including hospitals, employers, physicians, nurses, patient advocates and state and federal governments to work towards two bold goals:
1. Decrease by 40 percent the number of preventable hospital-acquired conditions in the next three years (end of 2013). The Administration believes this goal would mean approximately 1.8 million fewer injuries to patients with more than 60,000 lives saved.
2. Reduce by 20 percent the number of hospital readmissions in the next three years (end of 2013) by minimizing preventable complications during transition from one care setting to another. The Administration believes achieving this goal would mean more than 1.6 million patients would recover from illness without suffering a readmission within 30 days of discharge.
Over the next three years, if these goals are achieved, the Administration estimates approximately $35 billion in savings will be recognized across the health care system, including $10 billion to Medicare alone. In order to help ensure the goals are met, the Department of Health and Human Services plans to use $1 billion made available through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to support this initiative.
