The Health Coalition on Liability and Access (HCLA), of which ASA is a member, released the results of a nationwide poll that showed Americans are in favor of Congress passing medical liability reform. Currently, the House of Representatives is considering H.R. 5, a bill that would address medical liability costs.
The survey found:
• 58 percent of respondents want Congress to pass medical liability reform, and only 23 percent were opposed to reform.
• 71 percent of poll participants believe their access to affordable high-quality health care is threatened because medical liability costs are forcing good doctors out of medicine.
• 57 percent of those surveyed said medical liability lawsuits are one of the primary reasons behind rising health care costs.
