At ASA’s Washington, D.C. office on Thursday, June 23, ASA convened the Drug Shortage Summit Legislative and Regulatory Work Group. More than twenty individuals representing health care providers, manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers met to discuss potential regulatory and legislative solutions to the ongoing drug shortages. ASA was encouraged by the frank and open dialogue between all stakeholders. In the coming weeks, the group hopes to finalize consensus-based recommendations to present publicly.
ASA continues to work closely with the Association Society of Health Systems Pharmacists, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Hospital Association (AHA) who have become leaders on addressing these issues.
In addition to actions by this work group, legislation has been introduced to address drug shortages, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has begun an investigation into shortage, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is planning to hold a drug shortages meeting in September.
