In December 2011, ASA submitted a nonbinding letter of intent to the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) outlining intentions of applying for a Health Care Innovation (HCI) Challenge grant to explore the Perioperative Surgical Home™ model of care. The HCI Challenge is a CMMI grant pool of $1 billion with grants ranging from $1 million to $30 million to help develop “compelling new ideas to deliver better health, improved care and lower costs to people enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP, particularly those with the highest health care needs.”
The Perioperative Surgical Home™ model of care would pioneer the role of anesthesiologists acting to coordinate the services provided by other health care professionals during the perioperative period. Such a model may, if executed properly, help to manage the full spectrum of surgical episodes, reduce costly complications and improve the efficiency of care.
ASA is now in the process of working to compile this formal grant proposal by January 27th and is actively seeking partners. Ideally, partner qualifications would include:
A) The partner has a current Perioperative Surgical Home™ model of care or near-equivalent in place.
B) The partner would be the lead decision-maker on the project.
C) The partner would agree not to distribute the work-product document outside of the practice.
