Overview:
Over a week after Election Day, there are still six races that have not yet been decided. Democrats have netted at least six seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and that number may rise to seven or eight once the outstanding races are decided. This is woefully shy of the 25 seats Democrats needed to take back control of the chamber they lost in 2010. The Republicans are still a large majority in the House for the 113th Session of Congress.
ASAPAC helped elect 22 new members of Congress and 159 returning members. Among the returning members is Andy Harris, M.D. (R-MD-1), the first Anesthesiologist ever elected to Congress. ASAPAC supported Dr. Harris in his re-election bid, as did many of his fellow anesthesiologists across the country. The ASAPAC also helped three members of the GOP “Doc Caucus” return to Congress after facing tough challenges from Democratic opponents; Drs. Larry Bucshon (R-IN-8), Dan Benishek (R-MI-1) and Joe Heck (R-NV-4). One ASAPAC key race with a physician candidate, Dr. Ami Bera (D-CA-7), is still too close to call. Having participated in 209 races with four not yet called, ASAPAC has a current win rate of 88 percent. A full list of ASAPAC House and Senate races may be viewed here.
U.S. Senate
Republicans picked up a seat in Nebraska, but lost four seats - Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts and North Dakota - keeping them in the minority for at least another two years. Democrats were able to successfully defend all 23 of their incumbents, a feat that seemed improbable two years ago.
ASAPAC helped elect two new Senators to office, Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Martin Heinrich (D-NM). Eight incumbent ASAPAC supported Senators will be returning to office including one of the three physician Senators, Dr. John Barrasso (R-WY), who will be entering his second term. ASAPAC contributed to 19 candidates in Senate races. Twelve candidates were successful for a win rate of 63 percent.
Gubernatorial
Republicans won four states, keeping their total governors seats at 30.
