In a formal comment letter, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) expressed strong opposition to CMS' decision to dramatically de-value interlaminar epidural injections described by CPT® codes 62310, 62311, 62318 and 62319. ASA stated that "the values announced in the final rule clearly do not reflect the work, intensity and risks associated with these procedures. We request refinement panel review of these services and offer grounds to support this request."
ASA also provided feedback in regard to issues related to fluoroscopic guidance (CPT® codes 77001, 77002 and 77003) that will address the reservations that prevented CMS from finalizing the CY 2013 interim values for these codes. Should CMS not finalize the interim values, ASA requested refinement for those services. A refinement panel is convened by CMS and consists of 8-10 physicians representing the specialties that perform the procedures under review, physicians from related specialties, primary care physicians and contractor medical directors. If CMS honors ASA's request for refinement, ASA will have the opportunity to present arguments against the values CMS announced to that panel.
