On June 19, the House Republican conference held elections for their leadership positions, following Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s announcement that he would resign effective July 31. The new leadership positions are for the remainder of the 113th Congress, which ends in January 2015. Congressman Eric Cantor (R-VA-07) resigned from leadership following his primary election defeat, but will serve the remainder of his term in Congress.
Current House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA-23) was elected to replace Congressman Cantor in the No. 2 leadership spot. Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA-01) was elected to replace McCarthy as the House Majority Whip. Congressman Scalise, who currently serves as the chair of the conservative Republican Study Committee, won the position in a competitive three-way race.
ASA congratulates these members of the House Republican leadership, and looks forward to working with them in the coming months to ensure patient safety.
