Over the last several months, Congress has been debating ways to reform the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) amid allegations of misconduct and medical care delays. Members of the House and Senate are expected to pass compromise legislation this week that would address some of these issues, including patient waiting lists. Additionally, former Procter & Gamble CEO Robert McDonald is expected to be confirmed as the next Secretary of VA. As Congress considers VA-related issues, ASA continues to support bipartisan VHA Nursing Handbook Report Language contained in the pending House and Senate Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bills. The language provides that as the VA reviews the Nursing Handbook that it seek input from both internal and external stakeholders and that it work to ensure that the proposed Nursing Handbook does not conflict with other handbooks already in place, a reference to the Anesthesia Service Handbook.
