On June 23, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1190, legislation which would repeal the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB), an unelected and unaccountable board empowered to unilaterally cut Medicare Part B spending. H.R. 1190 passed with bipartisan support by a vote of 244-154. It will next face a vote in the U.S. Senate, where no timeline for action has been announced.
H.R. 1190, the Protecting Seniors’ Access to Medicare Act of 2015, is bipartisan and ASA supported legislation which would repeal the IPAB, which was created through the Affordable Care Act. Over the last few weeks, ASA encouraged its members to contact their lawmakers urging their support for passage of H.R. 1190, and ASA also joined with several other medical organizations in sending a letter to House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH-08) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-12) in support of the bill. As part of its efforts to halt the IPAB, ASA co-founded the Physician IPAB Repeal Coalition and has consistently endorsed and supported efforts for repeal.
Companion legislation, S. 141, is currently awaiting consideration in the Senate.
