Today, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a Request For Information (RFI) seeking input from specialty groups and other stakeholders on the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), the law creating the new physician payment system. In the RFI, CMS seeks comments on issues and questions it may need to address when crafting a proposed rule to implement the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and Alternative Payment Model (APM) programs under MACRA.
ASA is currently reviewing the 43-page document and will respond within the 30-day time frame established by CMS. Ensuring that physician anesthesiologists will be able to successfully participate in these programs is one of ASA’s highest priorities.
Earlier this month, ASA submitted comments to CMS on the proposed rule on the CY 2016 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule where we urged CMS to tae steps to ease the transition for physician anesthesiologists into the new payment system.
