On Thursday, December 1, California Governor Jerry Brown appointed Congressman Xavier Becerra (D-CA-34) as California’s next attorney general. Congressman Becerra, who has served in Congress since 1992, has been a supporter of ASA. In this position, pending confirmation by the state legislature, Congressman Becerra would fill the role of Kamala Harris, who recently won election to the U.S. Senate.
In 2008, Congressman Becerra was the lead Democratic sponsor of legislation addressing Medicare Anesthesiology Teaching Rule Reform. This legislation, which required Medicare to restore full payment to anesthesiology teaching programs, was signed into law and ended more than a decade of an unfair 50-percent payment penalty. In 2011, Congressman Becerra was one of the speakers at ASA’s Legislative Conference.
ASA congratulates Congressman Becerra on the appointment and thanks him for the work on behalf of physicians and anesthesiology residency programs, including those in California.
