On January 3, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder (R) appointed Michael Chafty, M.D., J.D. to the Michigan Board of Medicine. He will serve the remainder of a 4-year term made available recently through the resignation of a sitting board member. The term will expire at the end of 2017. Previously, Dr. Chafty was a member of Michigan’s Advisory Committee on Pain and Symptom Management.
Dr. Chafty has served on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists. Additionally, he is active within the American Medical Association where as a resident he served on the Council on Legislation and now is as a delegate and chaired the reference committee on legislation during the June 2016 Annual Meeting. He has also served on the Michigan State Medical Society Board of Directors.
Dr. Chafty completed medical school at Michigan State University, his residency and fellowship in pain management at the University of Michigan, and law school at Wayne State University Law School.
The Michigan Board of Medicine is comprised of 19 voting members. One other Michigan physician anesthesiologist, Rosalie Tocco-Bradley, M.D., serves as a board member.
With the range of issues considered by medical and osteopathic boards, now more than ever it is critical for physician anesthesiologists to seek out appointments to these regulatory agencies. A physician anesthesiologist’s medical or osteopathic education, training and daily experience in the operating room is extremely valuable to regulatory agencies as questions arise concerning patient centered, physician-led care.
Congratulations Dr. Chafty and thank you for your service and dedication to patient safety in Michigan!
