On April 26, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released additional guidance on data validation and auditing for the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) in 2017, including detailed criteria for the Improvement Activities category.
This guidance offers physician anesthesiologists and other eligible clinicians an opportunity to ensure their attestation for Improvement Activities meet CMS’ expectations, and demonstrates consistent and meaningful engagement during the period in which an activity was performed. CMS may request data and documentation related to MIPS performance for up to six (6) years. MIPS eligible clinicians and groups are encouraged to keep documentation for 10 years.

CMS expects to release detailed data validation criteria for the Quality and Advancing Care Information (ACI) components this summer. ASA will post additional details on MIPS as they are released by CMS.
