The American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine are currently soliciting comments from members and other stakeholders on several draft quality measures under development that address acute and chronic pain management. The measures were developed by a joint Technical Expert Panel of ASA and ASRA members.
Quality Measures Available for Comment:
• Infection Control Practices for Open Interventional Pain Procedures
• Multimodal Pain Management
• Patient Education on Safe Opioid Storage and Disposal
• Pre-Procedural Timeout Checklist
• Safe Opioid Prescribing Practices
• Use of Neuraxial Techniques and/or Peripheral Nerve Block for Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA)
The call for public comments is open from September 25, 2017-October 9, 2017. To provide comments or for more information, please visit the 2017 Measure Comment webpage.
With the ongoing efforts to link payment to quality of care, including the provisions of the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), ASA remains committed to developing meaningful quality measures that enable physician anesthesiologists to be successful under these new payment systems.
The public comment period is a vital component of the quality measure development process that allows for transparency and balanced stakeholder feedback. This period is an opportunity for members and other stakeholders to provide early input on draft quality measures and to ensure that proposed quality measures are meaningful and relevant to clinical practice.
