In February 2018, leaders from the American Society of Anesthesiologists met with officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to discuss the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) and how payment issues impact the specialty. As follow-up to several questions raised during the discussion, ASA recently submitted formal comments to CMS on how physician anesthesiologists can successfully participate in MIPS.
In its letter, ASA discusses collaborative ways to ensure development of the maturing MIPS program, including feedback and analysis on the Advancing Care Information (ACI) exemption for ASC-based clinicians; need for increased access to timely data to better understand members’ experience with the Quality Payment Program; and guidance on the development of the facility-based scoring option to be implemented for 2019.

ASA looks forward to continuing to work collaboratively with CMS to ensure a successful implementation of MIPS.
