ASA Endorses Bill to Address Maternal Mortality
On Friday, May 25, the American Society of Anesthesiologists offered
formal support for H.R. 5761, the Ending Maternal Mortality Act, introduced by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL-08) and Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA-03).
H.R. 5761 amends the Public Health Service Act to require the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to design and implement an aggressive National Strategy to combat maternal mortality, with the goal of cutting the rate of preventable maternal deaths by half in the next decade.
As leaders in patient safety, physician anesthesiologists are committed to improving patient care. ASA believes H.R. 5761 is a necessary first step in developing a national strategy to fight maternal mortality and that, if enacted, it can positively impact the experiences of mothers across the nation.
H.R. 5761 has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
