The American Urological Association (AUA) released a White Paper series on “Optimizing Outcomes in Urological Surgery” last week. Members from the American Society of Anesthesiologists® (ASA) contributed to the series, providing expertise on anesthesia-related topics and serving on physician workgroups dedicated to the project since 2017. Dr. Megan Graybill Anders, Dr. Joseph A. Hyder and Dr. James M. Moore, members of the ASA Committee on Performance and Outcomes Measurement (CPOM) represented ASA in two of the project workgroups. Anesthesia-related topics in the papers include considerations related to airway management, intraoperative management of glycemic status, anti-emetics, gastrointestinal motility, opioids, handoffs and considerations for Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols among others.
