On March 24, 2021, Governor McMaster (R-SC) appointed American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) member Jennifer Root, MD, FASA, to the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners (Board) for District 2. Dr. Root will serve a 4-year term that will expire in 2024.
Presently, Dr. Root works as an independent anesthesiologist serving many of the practices in South Carolina. Having completed medical school at the University of Alabama School of Medicine and her anesthesiology residency at Duke University, Dr. Root brings more than 25 years of experience in the medical field to the Board.
This appointment makes Dr. Root the first physician anesthesiologist to serve on the South Carolina Board in roughly four years. She is a past president of the South Carolina Society of Anesthesiologists and is the current ASA Director for South Carolina. Dr. Root is also an active and engaged member in three ASA committees, and holds the position of Vice Chair for the Committee on Governmental Affairs.
Physician anesthesiologists are strongly encouraged to seek out appointments for various regulatory agencies to protect and promote patient safety. Given the range of issues considered by state boards of medicine, osteopathy, nursing, health and/or insurance, physician anesthesiologists are extremely valuable as questions concerning patient centered, physician-led care arise.
ASA congratulates and thanks Dr. Root for her service and dedication to patient safety in South Carolina!
