Today, ASA President Michael Champeau, M.D., FASA released a message to the ASA membership regarding the imminent release of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) proposed regulation setting Medicare fees for calendar 2024. The regulation will likely include payment cuts for anesthesia services and the services of other physician specialties, particularly surgeons. ASA has launched a full-scale lobbying and grassroots campaign to oppose the payment cuts, including submitting formal comments to a key Congressional committee studying Medicare payment issues. ASA has formally endorsed H.R. 2474, the Strengthening Medicare for Patients and Providers Act, a bill that would, for the first time, add an annual inflation adjustment to the Medicare physician fee schedule. Additionally, ASA has urged Congress to push CMS to adopt changes to the punitive Medicare budget neutrality mechanism. ASA will share additional information once the proposed regulation is formally released.
