Apply by September 1 - Call for Applications for the 2019-2020 Medical Student Component Governing Council
All ASA medical student members who are interested can apply for an officer position on the ASA Medical Student Component Governing Council for the 2020 term (October 2019-October 2020). The deadline for applications is September 1, 2019.
Officers are elected by the delegates during the ASA Medical Student Component House of Delegates session on October 20, 2019, in Orlando, FL. The officers begin their one-year term at the conclusion of the session. The President-Elect and Alternate Medical Student Delegate to the AMA serve two-year terms. Applicants may contact the current officers to discuss the duties and responsibilities and to ask any questions.
A summary of duties and responsibilities is available in the ASA Medical Student Component bylaws. In addition to these duties, in person attendance is expected at the following events:
- ASA Medical Student Component House of Delegates Meetings (in conjunction with the ASA ANESTHESIOLOGY® annual meeting) October 20, 2019 in Orlando, FL, and October 4, 2020 in Washington, DC
- ASA Medical Student Component Governing Council Meetings February 28-29, 2020 and August 14-15, 2020 in Rosemont, IL
Please check these dates against any rotations or exam schedules you may have. Travel costs are the responsibility of each officer. Therefore, ASA strongly encourages you to establish a relationship with your state component society and seek funding from either the state or your medical school in advance of each event.
How to Apply
Available positions include:
- President-Elect (first and second year students only)
- Member at Large
- Senior Advisor (fourth-year students only)
- Alternate Medical Student Delegate to AMA
- Alternate (this position ensures full representation should one of the elected officers be unable to perform their duties)
All applicants must be ASA members from accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical schools in the United States. With the exception of senior advisor, we encourage fourth year medical students to be mindful in applying for governing council positions, as the service term considerably overlaps the typical residency matriculation date.
All interested candidates are encouraged to apply. Submit the completed application, a personal statement indicating why you want to be an officer (not more than 500 words), a current curriculum vitae and one letter of reference. A nomination form may be used in place of the letter of reference. Two letters of reference are required for President-Elect applicants. Incomplete materials will not be considered. Email all materials to email@example.com. Please note: Select submitted materials will be posted online for medical student delegates prior to elections.
We encourage all applicants to attend the ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2019 annual meeting. Your medical student leadership has put together an incredible agenda for medical students. We hope to see you there!
President, ASA Medical Student Component
