The ASA Resident Component Governing Council encourages resident participation, develops young leaders with experience in organized medicine and improves resident awareness of the role of the ASA in the evolution of the specialty of anesthesiology.

Resident Component Governing Council Positions and Outline of Corresponding Duties
Overview of President Position:
- Serves by virtue of being elected as President Elect.
- Term of office is one year (October to October). Will serve only one term.
- In the event that the President is unable to serve, the President Elect will serve the remainder of the term. Such residual term shall not count as a term.
Duties:
- The President shall serve as the spokesperson of the ASA Resident Component unless this duty or any others are delegated.
- The President shall attend meetings and serve on ASA Committees as defined by ASA bylaws and policies.
- The President shall organize all events and business of the Resident Component though may delegate responsibilities to other governing council officers or resident members.
- The President shall present an annual report to the ASA House of Delegates.
- The President shall serve as the Director, Resident Component, to the ASA Board of Directors.
- The President shall serve as a delegate to the ASA House of Delegates.

Overview of President-Elect Position:
- Must have at least 18 months of remaining eligibility as a member of the Resident Component.
- Term of office is two years (first year as President Elect, second year as President).
- Will succeed the President.
- If the President Elect is unable to serve, the President may appoint another individual to serve.
President-Elect Duties:
- Assist the President with his/her duties.
- Shall attend meetings and serve on ASA Committees as defined by ASA bylaws and policies.
- Act on behalf of the President in his/her absence.
- The President Elect shall serve as the Alternate Director, Resident Component, to the ASA Board of Directors.
- The President Elect shall serve as an alternate delegate to the ASA House of Delegates.

Overview of Secretary Position:
- Term of office is one year.
- There are no term limits.
- If there is a vacancy, the President may appoint an individual to serve the remainder of the term.
Secretary Duties
- Attend and record minutes for ASA Resident Component Governing Council meetings in March and August
- Communicate ASA Resident Component business to resident members, including but not limited to email blasts and quarterly newsletters
- Attend meetings and serve on ASA Committees as defined by ASA bylaws and policies.

Overview of Delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA) Resident & Fellow Section (RFS) Position:
- Serves by virtue of being elected Alternate Resident Delegate.
- Term of office is one year. Will serve one term.
- In the event that Resident Delegate is unable to serve, the Alternate Resident Delegate will serve the remainder of the term. Such residual term shall not count as a term.
- Resolutions submitted to the AMA/RPS shall have the approval of both the ASA President as well as the ASA Delegate to the AMA
Delegate to the AMA RFS Duties:
- Represent the ASA in a manner consistent with ASA policies and positions at AMA meetings.
- Work in cooperation with the AMA Section Council on Anesthesiology.
- Shall attend meetings and serve on ASA Committees as defined by ASA bylaws and policies.

Overview of Alternate Resident Delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA) Resident & Fellow Section (RFS) Position:
- Will succeed the Resident Delegate.
- Term of office is two years (first year as Alternate Resident Delegate, second year as Resident Delegate).
- Will serve one term.
- In the event that the Alternate Resident Delegate is unable to serve or fills a vacancy for Delegate, the President will appoint another to serve the residual term.
Alternate Delegate to the AMA RFS Duties:
- Support the Resident Delegate at AMA Resident & Fellow Section meetings.
- Represent the ASA in a manner consistent with ASA policies and positions at AMA meetings.
- Work in cooperation with the AMA Section Council on Anesthesiology.
- Shall attend meetings and serve on ASA Committees as defined by ASA bylaws and policies.

Overview of Residents’ Review Senior Editor:
- Serves by virtue of being elected the Resident Review Junior Editor.
- Term of office is one year.
- Will serve one term.
- In the event that the Residents’ Review Editor is unable to serve, the Residents’ Review Junior Editor will serve the remainder of the term. Such residual term shall not count as a term.
Duties:
- Perform the editing and writing duties involved with the Residents’ Review section of the ASA Monitor.
- Serve as Associate Editor for the ASA Monitor.
- Shall attend meetings and serve on ASA Committees as defined by ASA bylaws and policies.

Overview of Residents’ Review Junior Co-Editor:
- Must have at least 18 months of remaining eligibility as a member of the Resident Component.
- Term of office is two years (first year as Junior Editor, second year as Senior Editor).
- Will succeed the Residents’ Review Senior Editor.
- If the Residents’ Review Junior Editor is unable to serve, the President may appoint another individual to serve.
Duties:
- Perform the editing and writing duties involved with the Residents’ Review section of the ASA Monitor.
- Serve as Associate Editor for the ASA Monitor.
- Shall attend meetings and serve on ASA Committees as defined by ASA bylaws and policies.

“This position provides the opportunity to edit pieces for the Residents' Review column of the ASA MONITOR along with your co-editor. A background in editing and writing of any kind is helpful for this position. You work closely with the anesthesiologists who also work on the ASA MONITOR monthly. It is a great way to gain further editing and writing experience, and network with other writers. As a member of the governing council, you will participate in meetings to discuss ways the ASA can meet the needs of residents and future anesthesiologists. The position requires some amount of social media savvy in soliciting articles. The time commitment is minimal, about two hours each month. This was a very valuable experience for me and I highly recommend others to apply!”
Overview of DEI Ambassador:
Term of office is one year.
There are no term limits.
If there is a vacancy, the President may appoint an individual to serve the remainder of the term.
Duties:
Be involved in various DEI efforts at a national or state level.
Preferably be a member that identifies as underrepresented in medicine (URM).
Work closely with the ASA Committee on Professional Diversity.
Present an annual report to the House of Delegates upon request.
