MIPS Promoting Interoperability Component

MIPS Promoting Interoperability Component (formerly Advancing Care Information)

Previously called Meaningful Use (MU) under the EHR Incentive Program, CMS has transitioned MU into a new performance category within the Merit-based Incentive Program (MIPS) known as Advancing Care Information (ACI). The ACI component of MIPS accounts for 25% of an eligible clinician or group practice’s composite score.

The final rule was released on October 14, 2016. Prior to the passage of MACRA and the subsequent development of MIPS, anesthesiologists enjoyed an exemption from negative payment adjustments given to eligible professionals who failed to demonstrate meaningful use of electronic health records under the Medicare EHR Incentive Program. MACRA ended the automatic hardship exemption for physician anesthesiologists after the 2016 performance year. However, anesthesiologists may still qualify for an exception under the MIPS.

*Please note, in April 2018, CMS renamed the ACI component to Promoting Interoperability.

ASA has prepared the following resources for members seeking clarification on the requirements of the ACI performance category:
