MIPS Cost Component

In the final rule, CMS transitioned this category title from "Resource Use" to "Cost."

As described in the MACRA Final Rule Executive Summary, the Resource Use Component (otherwise known as "Cost" component), for 2017 performance year, CMS is "finalizing a weight of zero (0) percent" for this category in the final score. Eligible clinicians will not be required to report any data to CMS as CMS will use claims to calculate this component. MIPS eligible clinicians will receive a cost category score and feedback report for the 2017 performance year but this score will not count toward an EC’s final score for the 2017 performance year. This 2017 score is meant to serve as a guide for performance in the upcoming years.

In addition, CMS states, "We intend to calculate measures of total per capita costs for all attributed beneficiaries and a Medicare Spending per Beneficiary (MSPB) measure. In addition, we are finalizing 10 episode-based measures that were previously made available to clinicians in feedback reports and met standards for reliability."

ASA continues to advocate for physician anesthesiologists to be fairly and accurately assessed under the MIPS cost component.
