MIPS Promoting Interoperability Component

The Promoting Interoperability (PI) component of MIPS accounts for 25% of an eligible clinician or group practice’s composite score.

Prior to the passage of MACRA and the subsequent development of MIPS, anesthesiologists enjoyed an exemption from negative payment adjustments given to eligible professionals who failed to demonstrate meaningful use of electronic health records under the Medicare EHR Incentive Program. MACRA ended the automatic hardship exemption for physician anesthesiologists after the 2016 performance year. However, anesthesiologists may still qualify for an exception to the PI component under the MIPS.

*Please note, in April 2018, CMS renamed the ACI component to Promoting Interoperability.
