Kathy Marie Perryman, MD, is a retired pediatric anesthesiologist and associate professor of anesthesiology at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. She has a unique perspective on the anesthesia care team because she was an ICU nurse and a nurse anesthetist before she went on to 4 years of medical school and another 4 years of anesthesiology residency and pediatric anesthesiology fellowship.
Dr. Perryman received her registered nursing diploma at the St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Kansas City. She was a medical ICU nurse for 4 years before she entered nurse anesthesia school at Kansas University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in nurse anesthesia and became a certified registered nurse anesthetist. She then practiced nurse anesthesia in a care team for 3 years before going to medical school, residency and fellowship. She served in medical staff and department leadership positions, such as department chair and president of the medical staff, and taught residents, fellows, student nurse anesthetists and student anesthesiologist assistants for over 30 years. She has been active in Missouri Society of Anesthesiologists and is a past-president and was a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ Committee on the Anesthesia Care Team for several years.
Adam Striker, MD, FASA, is the past chair of the ASA’s Committee on Communications and is the series editor for ASA’s Central Line podcast series. He is Professor of Anesthesiology at Medical College of Wisconsin, a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist at Children’s Wisconsin and serves as Director of Clinical Operations for pediatric anesthesiology at Children's Wisconsin. He received his undergraduate degree in engineering from Purdue University and his medical degree from Indiana University. He completed his pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Northwestern University.
