Dr. Zach Deutch interviews Dr. Nicole Guinn, guest editor of the June ASA Monitor, and Dr. Steven Frank, contributor, about blood management and transfusion medicine. Listen in as the guests share thoughts on bloodless care, the history of transfusion medicine, patient populations, the possibilities of predictive modeling, and more. Recorded April 2025.
Nicole R. Guinn, MD, MBA, is a professor of anesthesiology at Duke University School of Medicine and the Division Chief of Neuroanesthesia, Head and Neck Anesthesia, and Offsite Anesthesia. Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, Dr. Guinn attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, NY, where she graduated with AOA honors. She then completed her anesthesiology residency and fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesia at Duke University Medical Center, staying on as faculty after completing her training.
Dr. Guinn served as the Medical Director of the Center for Blood Conservation at Duke University Medical Center for nearly a decade, working with patients who decline transfusion to receive safe care and improved outcomes. She also led the development of an institutional Preoperative Anemia Clinic, using her knowledge in the area of blood conservation to help diagnose and treat anemia in operative patients at risk for transfusion. She is known nationally for her expertise in management of patients “When Blood is Not an Option” and for preoperative optimization of anemia in surgical patients, having published multiple papers in well-respected, peer reviewed journals, giving visiting professor lectures and invited talks at national and international meetings on these topics and serving as immediate past Chair of the ASA Committee of Patient Blood Management. Dr. Guinn is also involved with the American Board of Anesthesiology, serving as an OSCE Committee member and APPLIED examiner for board certification in the anesthesiology.
Steven Frank, MD, is a professor of anesthesiology/critical care medicine as well as director for both the Patient Blood Management Program and the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Frank is passionate about improving blood utilization which, simply put, means giving blood to patients who need it but not to those who don’t. At work they call him “the blood guy,” and he specializes in everything from giving no blood in Jehovah’s Witness patients to massive transfusion for trauma victims.
Dr. Frank received his undergraduate and medical degree at the University of Missouri. He has held leadership roles in committees for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), the Association for Advancement of Blood and Biotherapeutics (AABB), and the Society for Advancement of Blood Management (SABM). His research has been written up in the New York Times and the Washington Post and in his free time he trains for ultramarathons.
