Learn about Best Practices in Maintaining a Clean and Safe Environment for Anesthesia Care
Implementing and following infection prevention protocols represent an essential component of anesthesiologists’ clinical responsibilities. Surgeries and other procedures can leave patients more vulnerable to infection, and such infections can subsequently pose complications and greater risks to patient safety. A clean venue of care also supports a safer environment for the clinical team.
Anesthesiologists and other qualified anesthesia professionals should be aware of the pathways pathogens can travel throughout a health care facility and take regular action to mitigate these infection threats. Infection prevention protocols can relate to surgical attire, the sanitization of surfaces and equipment, and the preparation and administration of medications, among other considerations.
ASA has published a range of educational courses, policy statements, and recommendations to guide anesthesiologists and other qualified anesthesia professionals in implementing infection control best practices locally.
