This refresher course lecture will address the broad topic of perioperative stroke. The speaker will discuss the epidemiology and known risk factors for perioperative ischemic stroke as well as the identification and management of patients suspected of having a stroke in the perioperative setting.

After completing this activity, the participant should be able to: Describe the incidence and risk factors of ischemic stroke; Explain how ischemic stroke can be diagnosed in the perioperative period; List strategies that may reduce the risk for perioperative stroke; Formulate a management plan for patients suspected of having a stroke associated with surgery.
