This panel will address three challenging issues that may face anesthesiologists working with children in a free-standing ambulatory surgery center (ASC). Addressed will be an explanation of the new American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS) minimal age criteria for scheduling infants at an ASC; the integration of trained nurses in the preoperative evaluation of pediatric patients; and the use of post-anesthesia discharge systems in children.

After completing this activity, the learner will be able to:

Compare the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Surgeons' minimal age guidelines for scheduling and discharging infants after ambulatory surgery;  

Understand the added value of integrating nurses in the pre-anesthesia evaluation process;

Construct a pediatric post-anesthesia discharge scoring system for ambulatory patients.
