After completing this activity, the learner will be able to:
Identify respiratory depression in the post-operative patient using both objective and subjective definitions;
Develop a hospital policy that will allow for improved practices in the management of patients at risk for postoperative respiratory depression on the regular nursing floors;
Discuss the predictability of respiratory depression in the postoperative period;
Evaluate current evidence in literature for postoperative respiratory depression;
Formulate a plan for the perioperative physician taking care of postsurgical patients that would effectively mitigate the problem of postoperative respiratory compromise.
