This refresher course lecture will present the updated recommendations of the ASRA practice advisories on Regional Anesthesia in the Patient Receiving Antithrombotic or Thrombolytic Therapy and Infectious Complications of Regional Anesthesia, as well as the recently updated ASA Practice Advisory for the Prevention, Diagnosis and Management of Infectious Complications Associated with Neuraxial Techniques.

After completing this activity, the learner will be able to:

  1. Review cases of meningitis and epidural abscess as reported in epidemiologic series and risk factors for serious infections following neuraxial blockade;

  2. Describe the pharmacology of anti-thrombotic medications and risk factors for spinal hematoma;

  3. Cite practice guidelines for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of hemorrhagic and infectious complications of regional anesthesia.
